The honest math

What does a Blackbox curator actually cost you?

Blackbox's recommended share for metadata-only curation is 20% of a clip's net income, paid on every sale, for the life of the clip. That's a fair trade when you're starting out. But as your portfolio grows, the math changes. Here's exactly when.

$60

What the share costs you per year vs ClipMeta Pro

$492

A 20% share costs more than ClipMeta Pro once curated clips net more than $95/month.

Curator share rates are Blackbox's published recommendations and are negotiable. Your actual agreement may differ. ClipMeta Pro is $19/month; high-volume contributors may need Studio at $49/month.

How curator shares work

On Blackbox, you can assign a curator to handle your metadata in exchange for a share of each clip's net income. The recommended rates are 20% for metadata-only curation and 40% for full curation (editing, uploading, and metadata). The share applies to every sale of that clip, in perpetuity, and Blackbox handles the split automatically.

It's a genuinely clever system: no money down, and your curator only earns when you do. For a brand-new contributor with zero sales, it's free. The cost only shows up later, after the clips start selling.

The crossover point

A flat-rate tool costs the same whether you sell nothing or everything. A revenue share costs more the better you do.

ClipMeta Pro is $19/month. A 20% curator share costs more than that as soon as your curated portfolio nets more than $95/month. At $300/month in net sales, the curator share is $60/month, more than 3x the subscription. At $1,000/month, it's $200/month. And it never goes down, because the share is attached to the clips forever.

What a curator does that AI doesn't

A good human curator brings judgment: they know what's selling, they may catch legal or release issues, and full curation includes editing and uploading, which ClipMeta does not do. If you want a human partner handling everything, a curator is still the right call.

ClipMeta replaces the metadata-only piece: titles, descriptions, up to 50 keywords, categories, and editorial fields, generated from the actual video frames, with you reviewing and editing before anything ships. You keep 100% of your clips' income, and you stay in control of quality.

What contributors switch for

  • Speed: about 30 seconds per clip instead of days of curator turnaround
  • Ownership: no permanent share attached to your best-selling clips
  • Control: review and edit everything inline before export
  • Workflow: native Blackbox CSV and FTP, plus Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, and Pond5 exports from the same pass

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Blackbox curator cost?

Blackbox recommends a 20% share of a clip's net income for metadata-only curation and 40% for full curation. The share applies to every sale of that clip, permanently, and Blackbox handles the split automatically. Rates are negotiable between you and the curator.

Is a Blackbox curator worth it?

If you're brand new with no sales and no time, possibly. You pay nothing up front and the curator only earns when you do. Once your curated clips net more than about $95/month, a 20% share costs more than a flat $19/month tool, and the gap widens as you grow.

Can I remove a curator share later?

Shares are attached when clips are submitted. Check Blackbox's current policy for whether and how shares can be renegotiated. For many contributors, the practical answer is that existing clips keep their share.

Does ClipMeta replace full curation?

No. ClipMeta replaces the metadata work, which is the 20% tier. Editing and uploading remain yours, though ClipMeta's FTP transfer removes most of the upload friction.

Is ClipMeta affiliated with Blackbox?

No. ClipMeta is independent and not affiliated with Blackbox.global.
